Urban Meyer got lost. It must be OK for the rest of us, too.
University of Florida football coach Urban Meyer is finally taking a break from the program. I think. Unless he thinks of something else he needs to do before finally taking that alleged "leave of absence."
The whole series of events, which started in December, has been amazing. Sparked by a health scare after the SEC championship game, Meyer initially announced he was stepping down altogether from the program. Then he shifted to a leave of absence. Then the leave was put on hold until after the bowl game … and then until after recruiting ended in February. And, oh, he decided wouldn’t miss any time next season, either.
It was stunning to watch such a successful person get so lost while totally in the public eye. Stunning to see a head football coach who embodies steadfastness and success and confidence get so sideways in his life.
I felt bad for him. And yet, oddly, I felt somewhat relieved, too. Relieved that despite whatever people achieve in life, anybody can and does get lost from time to time. Even the super-achievers are human. Even the most successful people question their path and priorities from time to time. Most people get to do this privately. Coach Meyer wasn’t so lucky.
Ironically, the state of Florida is a place where a lot of people come to get lost on purpose. So what's the big deal if the state's premier football coach got a little lost, too? And if he can get lost, I think it's OK for all of us on occasion.
